Funeral services for Alfred L. Akridge are Thursday

Services for Alfred L. Akridge Jr., 79, of Cairo, Ga., are at 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 23, 2011, at First Baptist Church, Cairo, with Dr. Joe Allen, the Rev. Chris Allen and the Rev. Jack House officiating.  Interment will be private.
Mr. Akridge passed away on Tuesday, June 21, 2011, at his home in Cairo.
Active pallbearers will be Spencer Duncan, Michael Scarbrough, Terry Whigham, Jet Cox, Jimmy Cook and Jerry Jones. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of Fisherman’s Sunday School Class, Guy Clardy, Fred Long, Donald Walden, Hugh Cunningham, Holmes Maxwell, J. D. Harrell, Jack House, Bill Gainey, Wendell Larkin, Chad Gordon, Jerry Akridge, Joey Brock, Paul Cromer and Wayne Collins.
Mr. Akridge was born on Aug. 1, 1931, in Thomasville, Ga., to the late  Alfred Lafayette Akridge Sr. and Edna Brinson Akridge. On Oct. 20, 1984, he married Marcella Walden Akridge, who survives. He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War from 1952 – 1954. He was retired from his business, Cash and Carry Feeds, in Whigham, Ga. He was a member of First Baptist Church.
He is survived by: his wife, Marcella B. Akridge of Cairo, Ga.;  sons and daughters-in-law, Steve H. and Myra Akridge of Cairo, and James A. and Pam Akridge of Cairo; stepdaughter, Gwinnette Hertz of Tallahassee, Fla.;  stepson, Danny Ray Walden of Marietta, Ga.; grandchildren, Megan and Tyler Akridge of Cairo;  step-grandchildren, Michael Scarbrough of Crawfordville, Fla., and Terry Whigham of Tallahassee, Vatolia Walden of Marietta, and Danica Fowler of Marietta; sisters, Mildred A. Houston of Dalton, Ga., and Hazel A. Houston of Cairo.  
A special thanks from the family goes to the Hospice of Southwest Georgia East Team, Becky Jones and Elaine Cole.
Mr. Akridge was preceded in death by: his wife, Monteen Strickland Akridge on Jan. 11, 1984, his parents and a brother, Alton Akridge.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Southwest Georgia, 808 Gordon Ave., Thomasville, GA 31792 or First Baptist Church of Cairo, P. O. Box 1538, Cairo, GA 39828.
The family will receive friends at the home located at 320 13th Ave. N. W., Cairo, GA.
