Syrupmaids pick up first region win
The Cairo Syrupmaids picked up a big region win Thursday with a 17-9 win over the Dougherty Lady Trojans.
Dougherty jumped to a 5-0 lead in the top of the opening inning, but the Syrupmaids answered with 10 runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Cairo added runs in the third and fourth innings and five more in the fifth.
Dougherty scored three more runs in the fourth and one more in the fifth, but it wasn’t enough.
Ashley Knight got the win on the mound, going three innings, allowing four hits, and striking out six batters. Shelby Hutchins came on in relief, struck out two and gave up two hits.
Taylor Ponder and Ashley Knight were 2-3 at the plate. Dominique Davis scored four runs in the leadoff spot and was 1-2, Hutchins had a hit and scored three runs. Kaycee Smith and Sydney Harrison both had hits as well.
