Cairo beats the Bulldogs

Matthew Ferguson delivers a pitch against Thomasville.

The Cairo Syrupmakers finished a busy week of baseball on Saturday with a 15-10 win over the Thomasville Bulldogs in a nonregion game. Cairo gave up four runs in the top half of the first inning, but evened the score in the bottom.
After leaving 26 batters on base the previous two games, Cairo batters answered with 12 hits including two home runs in the 15-run explosion. Trailing 4-0 in the bottom of the first, Cairo led off their part of the inning with a walk, then a single by Jonathan Moore, then a three-run homer by Tyler Steele. Cairo tied the game on a single by Donnie Baxter and a two-out RBI single by Alex Baxter.
Cairo took a 6-4 lead in the second with a single by Trey Kimmel and a walk to Moore. Matthew Ferguson then doubled, driving both Kimmel and Moore in for the lead. Thomasville tied the game at six in the top of the third, but Kimmel’s two-run homer in the bottom of the inning put the Makers on top to stay.
Thomasville hit the first four Cairo batters in the fourth inning, and Cairo scored three runs on a couple of fielder’s choices and a Thomasville infield error. Cairo had singles by Donnie Baxter, Alex Baxter and Brandon McCrary to score three more runs in the fifth inning. Cairo added another run in the sixth, and gave up four runs late but held on for the win.
Matthew Ferguson came on in relief of Jennings Childree in the first inning, and gave up two runs on a two-run homer in the third inning. He struck out four and walked one Thomasville batter. Tracy Asbell pitched the sixth and seventh innings, giving up four runs in the seventh inning and striking out two.
