Cairo and Bainbridge split

The Bainbridge Lady Cats continued to roll over opponents in the 2009 season with a 67-48 win over the Cairo Syrupmaids, while the Syrupmakers shocked the Bainbridge Bearcats 65-61 to go 4-0 on the season.
The Bainbridge Lady Cats have made a habit out of blowing out their opponents this year, but the Cairo Syrupmaids overcame a slow second quarter and battled back, losing 48-67. Bainbridge outscored Cairo 16-7 in the first quarter and 21-19 in the fourth, with Cairo winning the third quarter 17-14. However, it was a slow second quarter that really did the Syrupmaids, as the Lady Cats outscored Cairo 15-5. “The second quarter really hurt us. We played hard and even won the third quarter and finished strong in the fourth, but we’ve got to keep working to play four quarters,” said Cairo coach Lucy Baker.
Laneyshia Barber led the Maids with 14 points, while Dominque Davis had 10 and Kenya Reese finished with 9 points for the Syrupmaids.
In the boys game, the Cairo Syrupmakers stayed unbeaten in the 2009 season with the win over the Bearcats in a packed house Saturday night at the Cairo gym. Cairo led after one quarter 14-9, but fell behind 27-28 at the half. Bainbridge outscored Cairo 19-18 in the third to lead 47-45 after three quarters of play, but the Makers answered, outscoring Bainbridge 20-14 in the final quarter. Cairo’s Brian Walker stole the ball in the final minute to give Cairo the lead and sank a couple of free throws at the end to ice the game, 65-61.
Walker led his team with 14 points, while Jemonta Baker had 13, and Scooby Bodiford and Terrell Bryant each had 11 points on the night.
The Syrupmakers and Syrupmaids will be back at home Saturday night against Mitchell County in the Cairo Gym, with tip off at 6 p.m.
