Syrupmakers advance to the third round
The Cairo High School Syrupmakers advanced to round three in the state playoffs Friday night with a 9-7 win over Baldwin County Braves in Milledgeville. Cairo held off a late surge by the Braves, who cut the Cairo lead to 9-7 with 6:25 remaining in the game.
Cairo then drove the ball down to the Baldwin 30 yard line but fumbled with 30 seconds remaining in the game. However, the Cairo defense held Baldwin as Brian Walker intercepted a pass and allowed Cairo to run on the clock and end the game.
Cairo scored on a touchdown by Arthur Robinson in the first half to lead Baldwin 7-0 at the half. The Syrupmakers blocked a punt in the third quarter and scored a safety to take a 9-0 lead. The Baldwin Braves stopped Cairo on fourth down at their ten yard line and then drove 90 yards for their lone score of the game.
Cairo will now take on the #1 team in the state, the Gainesville Red Elephants, in Gainesville on Friday night.
