Syrupmakers travel to Perry

It’s time for the second long road trip of the season for the Syrupmakers as Cairo prepares to travel to Perry, Ga., to take on the Perry Panthers in a region 1-AAA match up. Cairo is now 4-3 on the season, while the Perry Panthers are 1-6 with a win over Hawkinsville.
According to Cairo head coach Tom Fallaw, don’t let the Panthers’ record fool you. “It’s region 1-AAA and anybody can beat anybody on any given Friday night. We have to stay focused and keep working to get better each week,” said Fallaw.
The Panthers have never beaten the Syrupmakers, losing 42-10 last year in Cairo. But the Panthers return 10 players from last year’s team including their quarterback and a running back with 4.5 speed. The Panthers also return several players in their secondary on defense. While making the playoffs the last few years, Perry came up short last year finishing 2-8.
However, coach Fallaw is concerned that the Syrupmakers need to put a full game together. “We haven’t played four complete quarters yet. I think when we do, we’ll have a chance to be pretty good,” he said. The long road trip is something Fallaw says is just part of playing the schedule. “It is what it is, it’s our schedule and we have to be ready to play each week.”
Cairo defeated Dougherty County last week 20-0 and is looking to secure a home field opener in the state playoffs, but must continue to win. “If we are going to be able to host a first round playoff game, then we are going to have to win our remaining games, and that starts this week,” said Fallaw.
Game time in Perry is 7:30 p.m. Fans can tune into WGRA radio or www.gaprep.com to hear the game “live.”
