Syrupmaids sweep Peach, face Monroe Wednesday
The Cairo Syrupmaid softball team picked up two big region wins last Friday, beating Peach County in a doubleheader at the Cairo softball field. The Maids won game one 13-1 and came back to win game two 9-8.
Cairo scored one run in the first, five in the second, six in the third and one more in the fourth, ending the game with the ten-run mercy rule. Dominique Davis scored three runs for the Maids. Ashley Knight also scored three runs and Jessica Turner scored once, both had two hits each. Knight singled and doubled. Jennifer Donalson also had a double and scored two runs. Martina Pearce singled and scored, Shelby Hutchins scored twice and singled, and Latasha Coleman scored a run as well.
Martina Pearce picked up the win on the mound, allowing just one run on one hit and striking out seven with just one walk.
In game two, the Maids gave up eight runs in the third inning, but battled back to win 9-8. Cairo jumped out to a 5-0 lead before disaster struck in the third. “It was just one of those innings where nothing went right, but we battled back and won,” said coach Amy Hagan.
Cairo added one run in the fourth, one more in the sixth, and won the game in the seventh with two runs. Ashley Knight, Jennifer Donalson, Jessica Turner and Martina Pearce all had two hits each, and Shelby Hutchins singled.
Hutchins also pitched a complete game and picked up a win in a junior varsity game against Bainbridge on Monday with the Syrupmaids winning 8-4. The Maids’ game with Monroe scheduled for last week was postponed until Wednesday of this week at Cairo, game time is 5 p.m. The JV squad will be back in action on Thursday at home in a doubleheader that starts at 4 p.m.
