Soccer team records win, baseball team falls
The CHS Syrupmaker soccer team won their second round playoff game for the first time in school history. Cairo defeated Spalding County 5-0 Wednesday night at West Thomas Stadium. Cairo will now face Oconee County this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in round three of the state AAA playoffs.
Cairo’s Lee Ponder scored two goals and had two assists in the win, John McClenny added a goal and had two assists, and Mose Willis and Nick Fusco also scored for the Makers. John Holt and Mose Willis both had an assist in the win as well.
Meanwhile the CHS baseball team recognized the senior players before last night’s game with Worth County, but came up short in the game, losing 4-2. Cairo managed just four hits in the game. Cairo now faces Monroe Thursday at 5:30 in Cairo and travels to Perry on Friday to play the Panthers at 6pm. Cairo is tied with Peach County for the region lead and is ahead in the tiebreaker, but must defeat both Monroe and Perry to claim their second ever region championship.
In other CHS sports news, the Cairo Syrupmaid track team had 7 young ladies qualify for the region 1-AAA finals to held in Albany next Tuesday. JaCourtney Alexander, Dominique Davis, Kenya Reese, Alexis Hampton, Tonisha Leaks, Lakishmie Jackson and Chasitity Robinson will all represent Cairo High School at the region meet on Tuesday.
