The 2008 championship football season will be something to remember for the ages. Last Monday night, the members of the Syrupmaker football team received their medals of honor in the form of shiny new state championship rings.
After a covered dish meal in the cafeteria for families, players and coaches, the awards part of the program was moved to the Cairo High School gymnasium.  There, an estimated 800 people gathered to watch the 2008 champions claim the spoils of victory.
The program began with the recognition of each player by class, where members received special plaques, certificates, letter jackets and patches.  Next, coach Tom Fallaw and his staff introduced a multitude of players who garnered All-Area, All-Region and All-State honors. Players were also given individual photo plaques of each all-star honor.
“Now it’s time for the moment these guys have been waiting on for a long time,” said Fallaw as he prepared to begin the ring ceremony. Each player was presented his championship ring, and his state championship game jersey with his name on it. After that presentation, each player was photographed with head coach Fallaw and with his ring and jersey. The individual pictures will be presented as well.
“This is a special group of young men, who, together, accomplished a tremendous amount of things. We are proud of each and every one of them,” Fallaw told the crowd.
During the meal, players and families were treated to a viewing of the 2008 season highlight video. That video and the state championship video are for sale at Cairo High School for $50 with the proceeds going to the Championship Ring Fund.
