Cairo splits with Peach in soccer

Cairo High School soccer coaches kept their eye on the ominous skies on Friday and waited on word from Peach County before loading the buses and heading to Ft. Valley. Shortly after lunch, the rains subsided and Peach County officials gave the go ahead for play so Cairo loaded the buses. The Syrupmakers picked up an 8-0 shutout region win and, for the second time in as many games, the Syrupmaids lost a close game, 1-4.
Scoring Cairo’s lone goal in the girl’s match was Catherine Wilson. “Again, this was another example of us playing really well, but not being able to convert goals,” said Syrupmaid coach Barbara Godwin.
In the boy’s match, Cairo picked up goals from Lee Ponder, who led the team with three goals, John McClenny had two goals and three assists, Mose Willis kicked in two goals and Logan Gainous added another goal. Josh Trejo helped out with two assists, Nick Fusco had an assist, and John Holt had two more in the win.
“This may have been our best game all season, I was really proud of our play tonight,” said Cairo coach Robbie Peterson.
