Syrupmakers face big test today

“It’s going to be an exciting game,” said Cairo coach Isiah Chance about his team’s second round opponent, South Atlanta High School, after the Makers beat Kendrick High School Saturday night in Columbus. The Makers will face the number one team today, March 4, in the state after knocking off Kendrick 59-53 in round one of the state AAA playoffs.
The Syrupmakers jumped out to a 22-10 in the first quarter and led 29-21 at the half. “We got off to a good start against a very good team and then held on for the win,” said Chance. Kendrick battled back in the third quarter, outscoring Cairo 16-12 to pull within four points. Cairo outscored the home team 18-16 in the final period to pick up the win and advance to round two.
Cairo had four players in double figures with Kentrail Brown and Darrie Stephens each scoring 13 points, and Jemonta Baker and Kendrick Kelly adding 11 points each.
Now Cairo faces the South Atlanta High School Hornets who beat Thomson Saturday night 93-52. South Atlanta is 25-3 and 11-0 on their home court. The game will feature Derrick Favors, who is the nation’s number one recruit and is committed to Georgia Tech.
