The Cairo High School soccer team is off to a great start with three big wins to open the 2009 season. The Syrupmakers have defeated Dothan 2-1, Northview 4-1, and Berrien County 3-0.
Meanwhile, the Cairo Syrupmaids soccer team is 1-1-1 on the season. Cairo defeated Dothan High School 6-2 and tied Berrien County 1-1, but lost 0-6 to Northview High School.
In the Syrupmakers’ first match of the season last Tuesday, Cairo defeated Dothan 2-1 on goals by John McClenny and Mose Willis. In their first home match of the season, Cairo defeated Northview 4-1 on goals by Lee Ponder, John McClenny, Mose WIllis and Joel Bass. Goals in Friday’s shutout win over Berrien came from Lee Ponder who scored one, and Joel Bass who had two goals.
Cairo coach Robbie Peterson is also pleased with his defense so far this season. “We’re scoring goals, and we’re also playing good defense. Logan Gainous, Edgar Trejo, Josh Trejo and Jake Kimmel are doing a good job for us on defense,” said Peterson.
The Syrupmaids beat Dothan in their opening match of the season, 6-2. Scoring for the Syrupmaids in the win were Katherine Wilson, who had three goals, and Ashley Cumbie, Maggie Bass and Jennifer Donalson with one goal each. On Friday, the Maids battled to a 1-1 tie with the Berrien County Lady Rebels at West Thomas Stadium, with Katherine Wilson scoring Cairo’s only goal of the night.
Cairo will be on the road to Thomasville Friday night to take on Thomas County Central. The JV boys play at 5:30 and the varsity boys will play at 7:30 p.m. Both teams will play at home against Bainbridge Tuesday Feb. 24.
