Cairo takes two from Monroe

On Friday night, the Syrupmaids got 13 points from Quan Sadberry, 12 from Kierra Addison and 11 from Kiyauna Masten as the Maids defeated the Lady Tornadoes 63-57. Cairo led 17-10 after one quarter, but the Lady Tornadoes tied the game at the half 29-29. Cairo outscored Monroe 17-15 in the third quarter and pulled away with a 63-57 final.
In the boy’s game, Terrell Bryant scored seven of his 12 points in the fourth quarter to help lift the Makers to a 50-41 win over the Tornadoes. Darrie Stephens added nine points and Kentrail Brown had eight in the region win. Monroe jumped out to a 12-10 first quarter lead, but Cairo eased ahead 23-22 at the half and stayed up by one 36-35 in the third before the fourth quarter explosion of points, outscoring the Tornadoes 14-6 in the final eight minutes.
In a region 1-AAA “play-in” game, the Maids slipped by the Lady Tornadoes on Monday afternoon 60-57 to advance to the first round of the region tournament on Tuesday at Westover. Cairo’s Kiera Addison led the Maids with 16 points, while Lakesha Simon had 15 and JaCourtney Alexander finished with 10.
The game stayed close all afternoon with both teams tied at 12 in the first quarter, and Cairo leading 30-24 at the half. Cairo outscored the Lady Tornadoes 11-10 in the third to lead 41-34 before hitting a basket in closing seconds to take a 58-57 lead, and adding one more as the clock expired to win 60-57.
The Syrupmakers, by virtue of a forfeit by Westover, are the number two seeded team in the tournament and play Thursday at Peach County. The Syrupmakers have already qualified for the state AAA playoffs by way of the second seed.
