Syrupmakers trample Trojans

By: Michael Best and Pat Wind

(Wed., Feb. 4) The Cairo Syrupmakers defeated the Dougherty Trojans on the hardcourt last night in Albany 57-50, while the Syrupmaids were beaten by the Lady Trojans 58-46.  The Syrupmakers, are now 14-6 overall with a 7-4 region record.

Cairo’s Kiyauna Masten led the Maids with 10 points, while Lakiesha Simon had 9 and Dominique Davis finished with 8 points.  Again, another slow start by the Maids  proved to be their downfall,as Dougherty jumped to a 12-5 lead in the first quarter.  Cairo stayed within 2-3 points the rest of the game but it would not be enough to overcome the first quarter deficit.

In the boy’s game, Darrie Stephens led the Makers with 12 points and Jamonta Baker added 11 along with Terrell Bryant’s 8 points. Cairo was 70% from the freethrow line as well.

Cairo jumped out to an 8-4 lead and never looked back, leading 22-11 at the half, and 33-27 after three quarters.

Cairo will travel to Perry Friday night and be home Saturday night at 6pm to play Thomasville on Senior Night.
