CORRECTION:
In the June 16, 2021 article about a double fatality in south Grady County that happened on Friday, June 11, the date of the memorial service for Marian Nan Smith, 65, Whigham, was accidentally omitted. The service is scheduled for Saturday, June 26, at 11 a.m. at Centenary United Methodist Church in Quincy, Florida. We regret any confusion this may have caused.
A local woman and a man from Climax were both killed in a head-on collision Friday afternoon near the Florida state line.
Those killed in the accident south of Calvary were Marian Nan Smith, 65, of Whigham, and Michael Keith Jackson, 40, of Climax.
Jackson was driving a fully loaded log truck, according to Trooper Steven Kornegay with the Georgia State Patrol, for Burgundy Timber in Bainbridge when the accident happened at 4:43 p.m. Friday.
Smith was driving an Infiniti four-door sedan north on GA 111 when she crossed the center line and crashed into the Mack truck head-on, Trooper Kornegay says.
After that impact, the log truck traveled off the west side of the road and struck a tree, Kornegay explains.
Both victims, who were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident, Kornegay reports, were dead at the scene.
Funeral services for Jackson took place Tuesday afternoon at Ivey Funeral Home Chapel in Bainbridge.
A memorial service for Smith is scheduled for Saturday, June 26 at 11 a.m. at Centenary United Methodist Church in Quincy, Florida.
