Cairo High School Class of 2021 earns more than $1.7 million in scholarships

The Cairo High School seniors preparing to graduate in a matter of weeks kicked off the spring awards season with a big start Monday evening during the annual honors night program. Held in the school auditorium beginning at 6:30 p.m., 71 honor graduates were announced, along with the class valedictorian, salutatorian, and recipients of various scholarships and awards of excellence.
Principal Chris Lokey announced that 148 seniors are eligible for the HOPE Scholarship, and the class will receive over $1.7 million in scholarship money.
The high school educators revealed the class honor graduates during the program, beginning with class valedictorian Camille Alyssa Dukes and salutatorian Michelle Jamelid Morales. These top two students have the first and second highest grade point average on both the 4.0 and weighted scale.
Honor graduates have kept a weighted G.P.A. of 6.0 or better and a non-weighted G.P.A. of 3.5 or better their entire four years of high school.

Recipients of senior scholarships and awards began with the Trade and Industry Awards, made by possible by a fund established in 1978 by Julien B. Roddenbery who believed that job skills are an essential element in education and that there is dignity in honest work. Winners of this monetary award were Greyson Bobby Vette Jonson, first place, and Asher McCade Childs, second place.

The Cecelia Wight Citizenship Award kicked off the Special Awards of the evening. The honor is given in memory of Mrs. Cecelia Wight, a former C.H.S. teacher. The faculty selects the recipient of this award. It is given to the student who exemplifies the qualities of good citizenship such as integrity, honest, high moral standards, dependability, community responsibility, academic achievement, attitude, cooperation and versatility. The recipient of the 2021 citizenship award went to Kaitlyn Leigh Donalson.
