Cairo Police are investigating a robbery that took place at a sporting goods store here midday Saturday.
Store clerks at Hibbett Sports, located on Eighth Avenue N.E., tell police that the suspect was in the store between 30 and 60 minutes before he ran outside with an armload of merchandise at 12:39 p.m.
A store clerk chased after the suspect and found him on the West end of the shopping center, but then the suspect ran North towards the back of O’Reilly Auto Parts.
The clerk told police he caught up with the offender there and told him he only wanted the merchandise and then he could leave, but the offender said “what’s up?” and got into a “combative stance.”
The clerk said he copied the actions of the offender who seemed to act as if he was going to give up and said, “nah, you got it.” Only, when the clerk got the merchandise, he looked up to find the offender pointing a chrome semi-automatic pistol at him and asking, “now, who got it?”
The clerk told police he dropped the merchandise, of unknown value, and ran back to the store.
The offender was later seen getting into a getaway vehicle. He is described as a small white male with a blue tattoo in the crease between his thumb and pointer finger. At the time, he was wearing peach colored shorts and a coral colored shirt.
Using surveillance video from area businesses, Cairo Police were able to determine the suspect escaped in a brown Chevy Blazer that had a white rope attached to the rear bumper.
A white female was seen in the front passenger seat.
Cairo Police Investigator Johnny Myers said Tuesday the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information concerning the case is asked to contact Cairo Police by calling 911 or (229) 378-3096.
