Cairo finished the season with a 9-1 record and won the end of season tournament to receive a number one seed in the GHSA State Riflery playoffs.
The Cairo High School Rifle Team won the Georgia High School Association’s Area 2 Rifle Championship for the first time in its history over the weekend by defeating nine other schools during a match held at Cairo NJROTC’s new rifle range.
The victory in the championship match meant that Cairo swept both the regular season (9-1 record) and championship match titles for 2021.
The Syrupmakers were led in scoring by team captain Gavin Hawthorne, a junior, who scored a career high of 282 out of 300 and was recognized as the season’s top shooter in the kneeling position.
Hawthorne was followed in scoring by junior Jonathan Amaya with a 275, Aidan Green with a 270 who won the Top Rookie Award, Dominic Miller with a 269 and Hunter Rowan with a 265.
Jonathan Amaya was selected for First Team All-Area; Gavin Hawthorne, Dominic Miller and Hunter Rowan were all selected for Second Team All-Area and Aidan Green was selected for the Rookie All-Area Team.
The Cairo Rifle Team moved directly into the 2021 GHSA State Championship playoffs with a win in the State Sectionals over Jones County of Area 5 by a score of 1086-1065.
The Syrupmakers were led by Gavin Hawthorne with a 275 who was followed by Jonathan Amaya with a 273, Dominic Miller with a 271, Aidan Green with a 267 and Hunter Rowan with a 262.
Cairo now moves on to the State Semi-Finals versus the winner of the Glynn Academy-Elbert County match.
