New and gently used shoes will be given away, while supplies last, at an upcoming event to be held at Davis Park.
The Cairo City Council on Monday night approved the special event permit applied for by Ja-Courtney Jenkins of Inspire and Reach Inc. of Atlanta.
The “Sole Searching” event will be held on Saturday, April 17 from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Davis Park pavilion.
The permit was approved on a unanimous vote of the council present, Councilman Demario Byrden was absent Monday night.
In other business, the city council:
• Authorized Mayor Howard Thrower to execute a resolution designating the area of jurisdiction of the Downtown Development Authority. The council previously approved expansion of the DDA’s jurisdiction, but the resolution adopted Monday night stipulates the geographical area as follows: An area bounded on the north by Third Avenue; east by Third Street N.E. and Fourth Street N.E.; south by Third Avenue; and west by Second Street together with the properties fronting on said streets.
• Authorized the mayor to execute a resolution and to adopt an agreement with the Georgia Municipal Association revising the association’s Defined Contribution Plan to bring it into compliance with the most up-to-date federal rules and regulations.
