LEAH PERRY, who lead the Syrupmaids with 16 points Tuesday night, goes up to make a shot. Cairo will host Hardaway Lady Hawks at the C.H.S. gymnasium this Friday night. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 protocols, only family members may attend the state championship playoff game.
The Cairo Syrupmaids haven’t played a basketball game in 18 days and it showed in the first half of their round one AAAA basketball playoff game with West Laurens Tuesday night at the Cairo High School gymnasium. The Syrupmaids got off to a slow start and trailed by as many as 10 points in the first half.
However, Cairo used a strong defensive effort in the second half to defeat the Lady Raiders 55-43. Trailing at halftime, Cairo came out in a smothering full court press in the second and took the lead by the end of the third quarter and then controlled the game for the win.
The Syrupmaids caused 45 turnovers on the night. Leah Perry led the Syrupmaids with seven turnovers in the game. Ambria Vicks scored 16 points to lead the Cairo offensive attack.
The Syrupmaids had been idled due to the cancellation of the region tournament after other teams were forced out of the competition due to COVID-19 protocols.
Cairo will now host the Columbus Hardaway Hawks on Friday at 5:30 p.m. It will be payback time for the Syrupmaids who were knocked out of last year’s region tournament by the Hardaway Lady Hawks.
Friday night’s game will be broadcast live on WGRA 790-AM/95.9-FM and on the internet at www.wgraradio.com. The game will also be live streamed on Facebook on the United National Bank Facebook page sponsored by UNB and The Cairo Messenger.
