THIS CLASS OF FIVE RAISED THE MOST money and came up with a fun way to announce the total that all Whigham School students raised for the Leon County Humane Society, $1,234.35. Elementary agriculture students at Whigham School recently participated in a fundraiser in the name of their class pig, “Piggy Pablo.”
“He was a rescue pig that was given to us by the Leon County Humane Society in the fall of 2019,” says Tracy Champagne, agriculture teacher at Whigham. “We wanted to give back to the Leon County Humane Society for waiving the adoption fee of $250.”
The original “Pennies for Piggy Pablo” fundraiser was scheduled for March 2020 to coincide with Piggy Pablo’s first birthday, but it was canceled due to the school closure during the early days of the pandemic.
“We decided to try it again to coincide with ‘Giving Tuesday.’ Students brought in their pennies, spare change, and other funds to help Piggy Pablo with his fundraiser. It was a huge success,” exclaims Champagne.
Students from every class in Pre-K – 5th grade donated change, raising $1,234.35 for the Leon County Humane Society. Champagne says they rolled over 25,000 pennies.
Mrs. Eryn Carpenter’s class placed first overall for donating $341.57.
“What’s amazing is that she has only five students! They are truly a little class with a big heart,” Champagne says.
Members of the Leon County Humane Society visited the school for a check presentation and Mrs. Carpenter came up with an innovative way for her students to announce the grand total.
Piggy Pablo and the student’s fundraising efforts were recently featured on the WCTV’s “Feel Good Story of the Week”.
