DR. ASHLEY REGISTER has been nominated to run for a seat on the Grady E.M.C. Board of Directors.
The Grady Electric Membership Corporation’s nominating committee has selected Cairo physician Ashley Register, M.D. as a candidate for the E.M.C.’s Board of Directors. Dr. Register will run against incumbent director James “Jimmy” Hammett for the seat representing the E.M.C.’s District six.
“I’ve been wanting to do it for 10 to 12 years. The want has been there a while, but now is the right time,” says Dr. Register about his candidacy. “It is a service organization to the community that provides a vital service to people.”
Register says if elected, one of his goals would be to get it legalized so that E.M.C.’s could help expand broadband in rural America. “It’s slow at my house,” he said of his internet connection. “From a progressive standpoint, that would be one of my goals.”
Register, who resides on Hadley Ferry Road with his wife, Laura, says he remained neutral during recent upheavals at the E.M.C., and he hopes that would benefit him as a candidate and director. “I don’t have a history with any political faction within E.M.C. I think that will allow me to be an open minded director,” he says.
“I feel like the E.M.C. is pointed in a good direction, and I know there are caring people there who want to continue do a good job, provide a good service and earn a livelihood. And, I think I can continue to help the board make that happen, give them support. I have no agenda,” says Register.
The family practice physician has experience serving on boards of directors for large entities. For the last 20 years he has served on the board of the Medical Association of Georgia; for approximately 24 years he has served as a director for Ameris Bank.
He is a former member of the Cairo-Grady County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, and current member of the chamber, and former member of Cairo Rotary Club.
A graduate of Seminole County High School, Register, 58, earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Emory University, and his medical degree from Mercer University School of Medicine. His residency took place at University of Kansas School of Medicine/St. Joseph Medical Center in Wichita where he was chief resident, 1991-1992.
The Register family moved to Cairo in 1992, and he opened a family practice medical office and began treating patients. Laura and Ashley Register are the parents of three adult children, Ellen, Anna and Prescott.
The election of directors will take place Oct. 16 at the E.M.C.’s Annual Meeting. The term will begin in November and end October 2023. The only other district up for election is District three. Incumbent Lee Powell is running unopposed in that district, according to Grady E.M.C. information.
