A 37-year-old Cairo man is behind bars on a drug trafficking charge after leading local law enforcement officers on a chase last week. The Grady County Sheriff’s Office has charged Kendall Wayne Maxwell with trafficking in methamphetamine saying they found more than 28 grams of the illegal drug in Maxwell’s pickup truck Wednesday, June 17.
Grady County Sheriff’s deputy, SSgt. Kelvin Nixon, reports that he was driving on Pierce Chapel Road at about 6:20 p.m. June 17 when he saw Maxwell drive his 2011 Toyota Tacoma at a high rate of speed as he left a residence there. Nixon states that he knew Maxwell was wanted, so he turned on his emergency lights to attempt a traffic stop, but Maxwell refused to pull over.
Nixon states he followed Maxwell onto Dollar Road, Stanfill Road, U.S. 84, Singletary Road, Joyner Road, Hall Road, then Grant Road where he lost sight of the truck.
Grady County Sheriff’s deputy, Sgt. T.S. Poitevint, advised Nixon that he was behind the Tacoma on GA 93S. When Nixon caught up, he reports that Poitevint was followed by deputies, Cpl. Freddie Bryant and Lt. Tito Hall.
At the intersection of 93 and Lewis Road, Maxwell allegedly started driving in the wrong lane and forcing other vehicles off the road.
Maxwell reportedly lost control of his truck on loose gravel when he tried to turn left onto Meridian Road. His truck crashed into a stop sign and pole, and he got out of it using the passenger door and tried to run away on foot.
Deputies Kenny Westen and Nixon were able to capture Maxwell who complained of a broken leg. Maxwell was transported to Grady General Hospital by Cpl. Bryant, and his pickup truck was searched.
Deputies said they found the large quantity of methamphetamine inside the vehicle.
In addition to the drug trafficking charge, Maxwell is also facing charges of fleeing/attempting to elude officer, aggressive driving, driving while license suspended, failure to maintain lane, driving on the wrong side of the road and disregard stop sign. He is being held in the Grady Detention Center.
