Cairo High School has announced its official plans for an in-person graduation ceremony for the Class of 2020. The ceremony is scheduled to take place in West Thomas Stadium this Saturday at 9 a.m.
Each senior is allowed to invite a maximum of four guests to attend. Regardless of age, guests must have a ticket to enter, and the school discourages the attendance of children under the age of 6, and anyone 65 and older or medically fragile.
The school’s N.J.R.O.T.C. cadets will direct traffic and assist with parking. Handicap parking will be available in the parking lot’s first row of spaces closest to the gymnasium as well as on the west side of the bandstand concessions.
In addition to the home side of the stadium, where visitors are traditionally seated for graduation, the visitor side and north end zone seating will be used this year.
Family groups will be escorted to the next available seating location, and guests are asked to practice social distancing.
Masks are recommended, and the school will have hand sanitizing stations set up throughout the stadium.
Graduates and families will not be allowed to congregate in the stadium, on the field or in the parking lot before or after the ceremony. The stadium will be closed after the graduates’ recessional, and guests will be asked to exit the stadium.
Graduates do not have to participate in the ceremony, and can pick up their diploma at the school after June 15 by making an appointment.
In the event of rain, the ceremony will be held in the C.H.S. auditorium with the graduates only, no guests allowed. However, the ceremony will be broadcast live on Facebook.
“Finding a way to celebrate their accomplishments in-person and in the company of their family, despite the necessary restrictions that are in place as the result of the pandemic, has been a focus of our work over the past few weeks,” says Chris Lokey, principal of C.H.S.
The seniors will have graduation practice on Friday, June 12 at 8 a.m.
