Following the Booker Gainor’s vacating of the office of Cairo mayor to run for the Georgia House of Representatives, the Cairo City Council issued a call for a special election on May 19 to elect a mayor to fill the unexpired term of the former mayor.
Gainor’s term did not expire until Dec. 31, 2021. Whoever is elected as mayor in the May 19 special election will serve out the remainder of the term and would have to seek election next year in order to serve a full, four-year term.
May 19 will be a critical election day as party primaries for local offices and a Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax referendum will also be decided on that day.
Qualifying for the municipal special election will open at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, March 30 and will conclude at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 1. Candidates interested in qualifying will do so with Municipal Election Superintendent Dana W. Barfield at Cairo City Hall.
The qualifying fee set for mayor is $244.80.
