Syrupmaids are battling for fourth in the region

The Cairo High School Syrupmaids face a very important week as they battle for the fourth spot in the region heading into the region tournament next week. Americus-Sumter and Carver are battling for the top two spots, and Dougherty has a firm hold on the third spot and the Syrupmaids are battling Shaw for the fourth spot heading in the final week of play. Last week, the Syrupmaids lost to the two top teams, Americus and Carver, but picked up a big win over Shaw. The Syrupmakers have found the going tough with a young team in a very competitive region and are still looking for their first win of the season.
On Tuesday night, the Syrupmaids were beaten by Americus-Sumter 69-47. Leah Perry led the Syrupmaids with 16 points, Chambria Vicks had 15 and Jy’Nyjah Cooper had 9 in the region loss. Americus-Sumter outscored Cairo 44 -20 in the first half and led 65-34 after three. The Syrupmaids held the Lady Panthers to just four points in the final period, but it would not be enough. On Friday night, Cairo lost to Carver on the road, 72-60. Cairo got off to a slow start with just 7 points in the first quarter and trailed 36-21 at the half. Leah Perry led the Syrupmaids with 19 points and Chambria Vicks had 18. On Saturday, Cairo picked up a very important win over Shaw, 55-50. Cairo led 24-21 at the half and 39-38 after three. Ambria Vicks had 16 points to lead the Maids, Cooper had 11 and Chambria Vicks had 8 in the region win.
The Syrupmakers lost to top rated Americus-Sumter and Carver, who is right with them in the lead in the Region 1-AAAA and came up short to Shaw on Saturday. Jay Taylor led the Makers on Tuesday against Americus-Sumter with 13 points, Jaylon Spence had 12 and Marquii Lovejoy had 11 against Carver and Lovejoy had 7 against Shaw and Spence finished with 6 points.
Cairo faced Westover on Tuesday night at home and will host Columbus on Friday night for Senior Night.
