After months of being closed, the Grady County Commission announced Tuesday that State Park Road and the State Park Road boat ramp at Tired Creek Lake are reopened to the public.
According to Grady County Commission Chairman Keith Moye, State Park Road will remain open for public use whenever the weather is nice, but when it rains or there are extended periods of rain, the road will be closed to public use.
Grady County Road Department crews have completed work on preparing the road to be paved and the road bed must settle for an extended time before it can be paved, according to county officials.
Grady County Administrator J.C. (Buddy) Johnson said Road Superintendent Stanley Elkins has been instructed to erect signage at the end of the road near the intersection with Old 84 to alert motorists if the road is currently opened or closed.
“I’m just glad we can open it back up. I’ve had so many calls about that road and folks wanting to be able to fish there,” Grady County Commissioner LaFaye Copeland said Tuesday night.
The public fishing jetty, which provides fishermen who do not have boats the public access to fish on the lake, has been inaccessible due to the closure of State Park Road. Now, not only is the main boat ramp at the lake reopened, but also the public fishing jetty.
The reopening of the main boat ramp and State Park Road is also positive news as Grady County is set to play host to the Georgia BASS Nation High School Fishing tournament at the lake on Feb. 23.
According to Grady County Lake Authority Executive Director Mike Binion, the top 20 high school fishermen from across the state will take part in the Sunday, Feb. 23, event at the county’s 960-acre lake.
County officials also remind local residents that annual passes for Tired Creek Lake are free to county residents and are now available from the Grady County Tax Commissioner’s office.
Lastly, in related news, the Grady County Lake Authority and Grady County Board of Commissioners will meet jointly tomorrow, Jan. 23, at 9 a.m. at the courthouse.
