Cairo man killed in Sunday shooting

Cairo Police and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are investigating the shooting death of young man early Sunday morning.
Officers were called to 1290 Calvary Rd. S.W. where the shooting took place at 12:47 a.m. on Sunday.
“When officers arrived on scene they found an individual who had been shot and the individual who did the shooting was also on scene,” states Giovannie Santos, interim chief of the Cairo Police Department. “Cairo P.D. Investigator Dewayne Person responded to the scene and a request was made to the G.B.I. office in Thomasville for assistance.”
The shooting involved two male relatives, according to G.B.I. Special Agent In Charge Jamy Steinberg. “The initial investigation revealed that two male family members engaged in a verbal altercation that escalated. Eventually, one of the males shot the other one who later passed away from his injuries at a local hospital,” states Steinberg.
Santos says law enforcement officers have recovered the weapon used in the shooting, and the shooter was being interviewed by G.B.I. agents Sunday.
Neither the name of the victim nor the shooter has been released officially, although many people have posted on social media about the incident. The Messenger will only report what is released through official channels.
Interim Chief Santos says, “In respect to family and the current ongoing G.B.I. investigation, the Cairo Police Department has not released the names of the deceased or the shooter.”
No charges had been filed as of press time Sunday. Steinberg says an autopsy was scheduled for early this week, which could provide further details in the case.
“Anyone with information regarding this case is encouraged to contact the GBI Thomasville Office at (229) 225-5090 or the Cairo Police Department,” says Steinberg.
