DIST. 3 School Board member Laura Register is resigning Dec. 31, 2019.
The Grady County Board of Education is currently accepting letters of interest and resumes from prospective candidates interested in serving as the District 3 representative on the board.
Incumbent board member Laura Register announced last week she is stepping down on Dec. 31 and leaving before her term expires.
The board is following the procedure it has used in the last several incidents when vacancies occurred and appointments had to be made.
“We are opening it up to see who puts their name in the hat. My hope is that anyone who does not get appointed will step up and offer themselves by qualifying and running for the seat in May and let the voters of that district decide who they want,” board chairman Jeff Worsham said Monday.
Interested candidates should write a letter to the board explaining their interest and what qualifications and attributes they have which would make them ideal school board members. Candidates are also asked to submit a resume with their letter of interest.
Applications will be accepted through Dec. 30 and should be mailed to the Grady County Board of Education, ATTN: Dist. 3 Vacancy, 122 North Broad St., Cairo, GA 39828. The school system’s central office will be closed Dec. 21-Jan. 5, so interested parties must mail their letters of interest and resumes.
The board is expected to make an appointment at its Jan. 14, 2020 board meeting.
Whoever the board appoints will be required to seek election on May 19, 2020 and will have to qualify to seek election March 2-6, 2020.
Ironically, Register rejoined the board in April 2014 when she was appointed to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of former board member Allen Jenkins.
Resignations are nothing new on the school board in recent years. Since 2003, six board members have resigned from the board and replacements appointed.
The history of appointments and the procedure followed by the board follows:
May 2003
Dist. 1 board member Todd Gainous resigned to accept a teaching position within the system. The board did not solicit applications and appointed Stanley Mobley to the board in June 2003.
May 2006
Dist. 1 board member Stanley Mobley qualified for state house and vacated his post. The board did not solicit applications and appointed Cuy Harrell to the board.
2012
Dist. 3 board member Byron Puckett resigned and the board solicited applications from interested citizens. Five candidates applied (a sixth submitted after the published deadline) and the board appointed Allen Jenkins.
Aug. 2013
Dist. 5 board member Scott Higginbotham qualified to run for mayor of Cairo and vacated his post. The board accepted applications and eight candidates applied. The board appointed Dave Dumas in October 2013.
March 2014
Dist. 3 board member Allen Jenkins resigned. Applications were accepted and five candidates applied. The board appointed Laura Register in April 2014.
June 2015
Dist. 5 board member Dave Dumas resigned. Applications were accepted and two candidates applied. The board appointed John White in July 2015.
