CSX RAILROAD officials notified city officials that the Broad Street crossing would close Wednesday for rehabilitation and should reopen by Friday.
CSX Railroad has notified City of Cairo officials that the railroad crossing on Broad Street in downtown Cairo will be closed beginning at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 11, and is expected to reopen by Friday, Dec. 12, at 8 a.m.
“This is a railroad project and we know it will cause an inconvenience, but we are hopeful the work can be completed on schedule. Please plan accordingly,” Cairo City Manager Chris Addleton said.
Addleton says crossing upgrades are being made as the railroad prepares to increase its speed while traveling through Cairo to 40 mph.
The city manager also advised the council and local residents to be prepared for additional trains coming through each day.
“We have been told that the Fitzgerald line is under repair and trains are being rerouted, which will mean as many as four additional trains per day coming through Cairo,” the city manager said.
The Messenger sought comment from railroad officials concerning the additional train traffic, but a spokesman said the newspaper’s deadline could not be met. The newspaper will report additional information as it becomes available.
