Grady County kicks off the Christmas season next week with a bang that includes several community events such as the annual Cairo Christmas Parade. The other events are Christmas in Whigham, Mistletoe Market in Cairo and the Sweet Winter Concert featuring the Tams.
Christmas in Whigham gets the Christmas ball rolling on Tuesday, Dec. 3, beginning at 5:30 p.m. with the Whigham School Chorus and Whigham School Band performing their Christmas concerts. A hayride will take folks through Whigham neighborhoods where residents are competing for best decorated yard awards. Vendors will be on hand and local businesses are staying open late for the festivities.
The annual parade in Cairo gets underway at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 5, with the theme “Christmas Under the Big Top”. So far, there are 110 entries registered to march down Broad Street for the festive holiday event. The colorful canopy of lights in downtown will shine brightly beginning that night and light up each night through the new year.
Chamber of Commerce officials advise parents and others dropping off children scheduled to ride on a float or participate in the parade to look for chamber helpers on golf carts or four-wheelers who can transport people to their designated area. They ask the public to respect all barricades placed on neighborhood roads around the chamber office as they are there to block roads for the safety of all involved. For more information, call the chamber at 229-377-3663.
The holiday fun continues on Friday, Dec. 6, 6 p.m.-8 p.m., at United National Bank where snow is in the forecast. Santa will be on hand to listen to Christmas wishes and pose for photos, and children can play in the snow and enjoy milk and cookies at the bank, located at 722 N. Broad St.
Shopping for Christmas gifts during the 4th Annual Mistletoe Market in downtown Cairo will take place on Saturday, Dec. 7, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Local musicians will be on hand performing Christmas music, artisan vendors will have their wares for sale and local shops will be open for business as Broad Street is blocked all day.
Capping off the day is the Sweet Winter Concert featuring The Tams, 6:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m. on Broad Street. Known for such hits as “Be Young, Be Foolish, Be Happy,” The Tams have been entertaining audiences for more than 50 years with their beach music, smooth soul and R&B hits. The event, sponsored by Cairo Main Street, is free and the public is encouraged to bring their own chairs.
