LOCAL RESIDENTS received free turkeys courtesy of J.J. Wilcox and his family in this file photo.
The 6th annual J.J. Wilcox Turkey Giveaway will take place early next week in Cairo. The professional football player and his family have given away 500 turkeys each holiday season for the last five years.
This year’s event will take place at Washington Middle School on Tuesday, Nov. 26, beginning at 11 a.m. The free food is given on a first come first serve basis.
Not only does Wilcox give the main course, he includes all the trimmings. That includes stuffing, green beans, yams and cranberry sauce. Wilcox, who was placed on the reserve/injured list of the Atlanta Falcons over the summer, puts a priority on the elderly, sick and shut-ins, according to local volunteers who help with the giveaway.
Wilcox, a former Syrupmaker, is a graduate of Cairo High School and Georgia Southern University.
