ELECTION SUPERINTENDENT DENISE MADDOX was busy Tuesday conducting logic and accuracy training on the county’s voting machines to be used in the advance voting and election day voting this year.
Next Monday, Oct. 7, is the deadline to register to vote for anyone not already a registered voter who would like to participate in the important upcoming local elections in November.
Residents of the City of Cairo as well as county residents can register at the board of registrar’s office, located at 24 Third Ave. N.E. behind the Grady County Courthouse.
In Cairo, three city council seats are up for election and voters will also be casting ballots on whether or not alcoholic beverages can be sold by the package or by the drink on Sundays.
Countywide, voters will be voting on the one percent Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax. This is not an additional tax, but will continue the existing one percent sales tax that expires next year. The sales tax proceeds would be split between the county and the cities of Cairo and Whigham, if approved by the voters.
Advanced voting for both the Cairo and county elections begins on Oct. 14 at 8:30 a.m. and will run through Friday, Nov. 1. The early voting also takes place at the board of registrars office for both the city and county election.
