DISTRICT 3 Cairo City Councilman Bobby Gwaltney was the first candidate to qualify for the Nov. 5 municipal general election. Assisting him are City Clerk Carolyn Lee, center, and Asst. City Clerk Dana Barfield.
Qualifying for the upcoming Cairo municipal general election got underway Monday and as of the close of business Tuesday three candidates had qualified.
All three of the qualifiers are incumbent members of the Cairo City Council.
The first candidate to qualify at 8:30 a.m. Monday was veteran Councilman Bobby Gwaltney followed by Councilman Jerry Cox and then Mayor Pro Tem Lannis Thornton.
A number of other individuals have expressed interest in qualifying but had not done so as The Messenger went to press Wednesday morning.
District 3 Councilman Gwaltney is seeking his sixth term on the council, District 1 Councilman Thornton is seeking his fifth term, and Councilman Cox is running for a second term.
Qualifying ends Friday at 4:30 p.m. at Cairo City Hall. The qualifying fee for city council is $219.60.
The election will be held Nov. 5.
