Dr. Cook, a former school superintendent and RESA director, is associated with the Carl Vinson Institute at the University of Georgia. The Grady County Archway Partnership arranged for Dr. Cook to conduct the whole board training.
The Grady County Board of Education typically meets on the second Tuesday of each month, but not this month.
The board voted last month to reschedule its July meeting to Tuesday, July 16 beginning at 5 p.m. at the VanLandingham Center, 203 North Broad St.
All meetings of the board are open to the public.
The board held its called meeting last Thursday for whole board training and to address several items of business.
The board voted unanimously to spend up to $150,000 for site work for the proposed new Navy ROTC building to be constructed on the campus of Cairo High School. Southern Contractors of Cairo has been awarded the contract for the job.
The board members also agreed to pay up to $32,000 for a new roof for the Whigham School cafeteria. Bainbridge Roofing is the contractor for the project.
Regarding personnel, the board approved the hiring of Kimber Sellers – counselor at Washington Middle School; James Robertson – teacher at Northside Elementary School; Jonathan Nolton – special ed teacher and Cairo High School boys basketball team head coach; Lainia Wells – special ed parapro at Whigham; Courtney Crosson – history teacher at CHS; Trenise Price – parapro at Northside Elementary School; April Ferrell – parapro at CHS; Toney Powell – PE teacher at Eastside Elementary School; and Angela Arbeary – technology parapro at Eastside.
The board also accepted the resignation of Bridget Williams and Alisa Haynes, both teachers at Northside.
