Cairo soprano Whitney Scanling, Tallahassee oboist Mary Abbott and organist Ed Self practiced Monday evening for a special musical program to be presented at the 11 a.m. worship service at Cairo First United Methodist Church on Sunday. Mrs. Abbott is holding the 17th century instrument called an oboe d’amore that she will be playing Sunday. Self is the longtime organist at FUMC and Mrs. Scanling, a member of the FUMC’s Chancel Choir and wife of CHS Band director John Scanling, is a music educator at Southside Elementary School.
Lovers of the fine arts and classical music will not want to miss the ministry in music at Cairo First United Methodist Church this Sunday.
At the traditional 11 a.m. worship service, the church will welcome Mary Abbott of Tallahassee’s Trinity United Methodist Church who will play the oboe and the oboe d’amore, a classic instrument from the 17th century.
Abbott will accompany the Chancel Choir on their “anthem” and for a solo by Whitney Scanling of Cairo, who will sing “My Soul Praises the Lord” with oboe d’amore obligato.
Finally, Abbott will also accompany FUMC organist Ed Self and pianist Megan Lokey on a bah concerto movement for the Prelude to open Sunday’s service.
Dr. Ed Lyon, minister of music at FUMC, extends a personal invitation to the local community to come and hear this unique instrument and worship with the Cairo congregation this Sunday morning.
