Donald “Dickie” Thomas
A member of the Grady County School System police force and former employee of the Grady County Sheriff’s Office has announced his intentions to run for sheriff in 2020, but is declining to discuss his candidacy.
In this edition of The Messenger, on page A3, Donald “Dickie” Thomas has paid for an ad encouraging local voters to support him for sheriff. The Messenger reached out to Thomas for additional comment Tuesday and the school resource officer declined.
“I will, but not at this time,” Thomas said.
Thomas was hired in February as the second member of the new Grady County School System Police Department. Officer Thomas serves as the Shiver Elementary School Resource Officer.
Officer Thomas came to the school system from the Grady County Sheriff’s Office where he was employed from October 2007 until January of this year. He worked for a short time as a correctional officer before going to work with the Sheriff’s Office. Prior to law enforcement, Thomas was employed by the City of Cairo Gas Department from July 1997 until June 2006.
Incumbent Grady County Sheriff Harry Young has made no secret of his plans to seek reelection next year and when contacted by The Messenger this week, Sheriff Young confirmed his plans had not changed.
The sheriff also declined to comment on any other candidates.
