Captain Charles Parker
Grady countians are encouraged to attend the 2019 Memorial Day observance planned for Monday morning in the cool confines of the Woman’s Club of Cairo.
The program will begin at 10 a.m. and is being hosted by the American Legion Post 122, Post 544 and Post 8433 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
The keynote speaker for this year’s program will be Captain Charles Parker, U.S. Navy Chaplain Corps, retired.
Dr. Parker is the pastor of Pine Hill Baptist Church in south Grady County and also serves as the vice president of development for the Baptist College of Florida in Graceville, Fla.
Master of Ceremonies will be American Legion Post 122 Commander Tom Brown. VFW Post 8433 Commander Charles Jackson is also slated to make brief remarks.
With a forecast for dangerously high temperatures over the next several days, planners decided to hold the program indoors.
This year also marks the 100th anniversary of the American Legion. Officials encourage local residents to attend Monday’s ceremony.
Post 122 will also treat families of veterans to a pancake breakfast on Monday from 7 a.m. until 9 a.m. at the Cairo Masonic Lodge, next door to the Woman’s Club of Cairo. Commander Brown says all local veterans and their families are invited to attend.
