Authorities are looking for the killer of a Cairo teenager found shot to death in his car early Thursday. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is releasing very little information about the killing of Cameron Wooten. The 18-year-old’s body was found inside his car on the Upper Hawthorne Trail Thursday, May 16, sometime around 4 a.m.
A Grady County Sheriff’s deputy had been dispatched to check on a report of a suspicious vehicle in the area and discovered Wooten’s body in the car. At 4:22 a.m., the Grady County Sheriff’s Office requested GBI assistance with the case.
An autopsy of Wooten’s body was performed at the GBI Macon Crime Lab on Friday, according to GBI Special Agent in Charge Jamy Steinberg. Steinberg declined to release the findings of the autopsy except to say Wooten had been shot.
As part of their investigation, law enforcement officers have conducted “interviews of many people in multiple counties,” according to SAC Steinberg.
Steinberg says a motive in this case is yet to be determined. Although he did say Wooten was found in a car he was known to drive, he did not want to confirm the make or model of the vehicle, or exactly where in the car Wooten’s body was found or where his gunshot wound or wounds were located.
Steinberg did state, “Several tips have been received by law enforcement regarding this investigation. We are appreciative of the calls and urge anyone who has information about the case to call GBI at 229-225-4090 or the Grady County Sheriff’s Office at 229-377-5200.”
This is the fourth homicide in Cairo in five months. Donald Vandergriff, 62, was found stabbed to death in his Cairo home on New Year’s Day. Alex Smith III, 67, of Cairo, was arrested Feb. 21 and charged with Vandergriff’s murder.
On March 3, Jimmy Lee Bryant, 86, was shot to death in his yard on MLK Junior Drive. Derrick Clark, 31, of Donalsonville, is charged with Felony Murder and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon in connection to Clark’s death.
Travis Christopher White, 33, was shot and killed on March 29, and his brother, Joseph Michael White, 31, is charged with his murder.
Law enforcement officers say they hope to make an arrest in this latest shooting death, as well.
