The second annual Easter Egg Drop at the Cairo Municipal Airport will be held Saturday, April 20, according to Cairo Mayor Booker Gainor.
The mayor announced this week he has formed a “Quality of Life Committee,” which is planning and organizing the community event scheduled for 4 p.m. until 7 p.m on April 20.
Organizers say the event is open to children 15 and younger and the egg drop will begin at 5:30 p.m.
The event was organized by the mayor last year as an opportunity to expose local children to the local airport and aviation. Easter eggs are dropped from an airplane passing over the Cairo Municipal Airport.
Serving on the planning committee, in addition to the mayor, are Councilman Demario Byrden, Christina Byrden, Airport fixed based operator Steven Bible, Grady County Commission Chairman LaFaye Copeland, Nola Daughtry, Verna Grant, Ann Hopkins and Dr. Mary Weaver.
Organizers say they hope to be better organized than last year by having multiple drops for various age groups.
“The goal this year is to have more organization by having kids identified by age groups, allowing certain ages to participate together in an effort to reduce some of the confusion that went on last year,” Mrs. Byrden said.
The committee will be seeking donations of plastic eggs filled with individually wrapped pieces of candy and secured with tape. Monetary donations will also be accepted and all donations may be dropped off at Cairo City Hall between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday-Friday.
A crowd estimated at more than 400 took part in last year’s event. More than 3,000 eggs were donated last year and hunted by local children.
In addition to the egg drop, the mayor says there will be prizes, games and food available on site.
The mayor thanked his fellow council members Monday night for authorizing the use of the airport for the holiday event. He said it would be a great time for families to enjoy fun, food and fellowship.
