Lawmen move quickly to nab alleged shooter

The day after an 18-year-old boy from Climax was shot in Cairo, Cairo Police had a Pelham teenager in custody charged in the incident. The altercation happened last week in the 800 block of 10th Street Northeast.
Radel Sweet of Climax was shot around 6:25 p.m. Tuesday, July 31.
A friend, Marcus Gaines of Whigham, told police that Sweet had called and asked him to pick him up at his grandfather’s house on 10th Street. Gaines said Sweet seemed excited over the telephone.
When Gaines arrived in the 800 block of 10th, he did not see Sweet at first, but then saw him running towards his vehicle with four other males following behind, according to Cairo Police. Once in the passenger seat, Sweet lost consciousness then Gaines saw blood and drove to Grady General Hospital’s Emergency Room.
Cairo Police were called to the hospital when medical workers discovered Sweet was bleeding from a gunshot wound.
Kolby Cowart, an 18-year-old from Pelham, was arrested the next day, Wednesday, Aug. 1, at 3:44 p.m. and charged with aggravated assault in the shooting, according to Cairo Police.
