DOT to conduct safety audit here

Georgia Department of Transportation officials have not approved the installation of a traffic signal at the busy intersection of Fifth Street S.E. and Fourth Avenue S.E. in front of Cairo High School, but they have agreed to conduct a road safety audit here on Nov. 8.
Cairo city officials have requested the new traffic signal numerous times in the past only to be spurned by the D.O.T.
Cairo City Manager Chris Addleton said that the audit will allow local stakeholders to make the case for the traffic light. The listening session is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. and end no later than 5 p.m.
“I don’t think it will last four hours, but hopefully we will get some movement on it and we can make our case,” Addleton said.
Councilmen suggested in addition to police and school system officials that local industries such as Performance Food Group, Woodhaven, RBI Trucking, Monrovia and local logging companies be invited to participate.
Councilman Ernest Cloud suggested the session be held in the council chamber rather than at city hall to accommodate a larger crowd.
