Relay for Life steps off at Davis Park Friday night

The footsteps of hundreds of Grady County cancer survivors, caregivers and volunteers will be heard at Cairo’s Davis Park as the annual American Cancer Society Relay for Life steps off Friday afternoon.
During the Relay, local volunteers will celebrate people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost and provide information for lifesaving change.
The Relay activities begin with an Opening Ceremony at 6 p.m. and will continue with a Survivor’s Lap, Caregiver’s Lap and a Luminaria Ceremony. During the Relay, members of teams will take turns walking or running around the track to draw attention to the American Cancer Society’s role in fighting cancer. Local teams have held fundraising events for the past several months to support the Relay.
The theme this year, “Give Cancer the Boot,” is Western. The Grady County Relay will include performances by Bobby Newman’s “Just Us” band, The Cairo High School Jazz Band, Jeff Davis, and “The FIRM” dance troupe. In addition, several food options will be on hand to satisfy those who arrive hungry.
Alumni of the CHS Syrupmaker Band are requested to meet at Davis Park at 5:30 p.m. Friday wearing red shirts. The alumni will join the Jazz Band in performing “The Battle Hymn” as a tribute to the late Joe A. David, succumbed to cancer last year.
The Relay will wrap up at midnight.
Funds raised will help the American Cancer Society provide free information and support for people facing the disease today, educate people about how to reduce their risk for cancer or detect it early when it’s the easiest to treat, and fund cancer research.
