New reflectors help firemen spot hydrants

If you’ve noticed some new blue reflectors on city streets then you will also notice that they are placed near city fire hydrants.
The reflectors were recently installed to aid firemen in identifying the locations of hydrants throughout the city.
“They’ve had them in communities where I’ve lived before and when I saw them I knew immediately what they were. I think it’s a great move by Chief Bill Schafer and the Cairo Fire Department,” Cairo City Councilman Jerry Cox said Monday night.
The hydrants are also painted based on a color code that indicates to firemen the size of the water line feeding the hydrant, a move that was taken many years ago.
