Date of school board’s June meeting is changed

The Grady County Board of Education will meet a week earlier than normal this month.
Board members voted unanimously last month to reschedule the June meeting from its traditional second Tuesday of the month to the first Tuesday.
The board meeting will be next Tuesday, June 7 at 7 p.m.
Prior to the board meeting, at 3 p.m., board members will undergo whole board training that is required annually by the Georgia General Assembly. The training will be conducted by a representative of the Georgia School Boards Association.
The training is scheduled to last from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. The board will break for dinner before convening the board meeting at 7 p.m.
All sessions will be held at the VanLandingham Center, 203 North Broad Street.
Board members will also receive additional training hours later in the week when they travel to Savannah for the GSBA summer conference. Training sessions will be held next Wednesday and Thursday with the conference beginning Friday and concluding Saturday.
Scheduled to participate are Chairman Laura Register, Vice Chairman Robbie Chaplin, and board members Teresa Gee Harris and John White. Board member Jeff Worsham will not be in attendance.
At the urging of Board member Harris, GSBA has invited the Cairo High School Jazz Band to perform at the opening session next Friday morning at 8 o’clock.
According to Grady County School Superintendent Dr. Kermit Gilliard, GSBA invites student groups to perform annually at the opening of the summer conference. Last year, Ms. Harris mentioned to Dr. Gilliard she would like the CHS band to perform and the superintendent suggested the Jazz Band be invited. After discussing it with GSBA officials, an invitation was extended.
CHS Band Director John Scanling and the members of the Jazz Band have been busy preparing for next Friday’s concert.
