Fit Fest returns April 30

by Betsy McGriff

After a hiatus in 2015, Youth Fit Fest is returning to Cairo’s Davis Park and Roddenbery Memorial Library. This year’s event will feature free family fitness activities including kid-friendly workout activities with local trainers and hands-on fitness demonstrations.
Volunteers from Grady County School Nutrition and UGA Extension will be on hand with healthy snack demonstrations. Grady General Hospital and the Grady County Health Department representatives will provide free health screenings for parents. The event is coordinated by the Archway Partnership, Grady General Hospital, and Roddenbery Memorial Library. The 2016 Community Health Rankings released by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation show that Grady County was ranked 105th out of 159 Georgia counties in overall health outcomes, and the data are equally disheartening for the percentage of obese adults and adults who are physically inactive.  The Youth Fit Fest organizers say they hope to help families come together to reduce these numbers and teach children the importance of health and wellness.
The 2016 event is planned for Saturday, April 30 and will kick off with a one-mile fun run/walk around Davis Park at 9:30 a.m. The fitness and nutrition demonstrations and activities will begin at 10 a.m. and will conclude at Noon.
