King Day festivities are planned for Monday

Cairo will celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., with a parade and program on Monday, the legal holiday set aside to honor the slain civil rights leader.
A local group of volunteers with the Martin Luther King Jr. Collaborative has been planning for this year’s annual celebration for nearly a year. The theme of the 2015 parade is “All Lives Matter.”
The parade will begin at 11 a.m. in front of the Grady County Courthouse. The parade route will proceed south on Broad Street, through downtown Cairo, turn west to MLK Jr. Ave. S.W., and continue to Holder Park where a program, followed by a free community lunch, will take place.
All floats will be judged and trophies awarded for 1st-3rd place winners.
Grand Marshall for the parade is Cairo native Fergus D. Robinson Sr., an account manager with Evoqua Water Technologies in Thomasville and active mentor. Robinson, a 1994 graduate of Cairo High School, has degrees from Southwest Georgia Technical College (now Southern Regional Technical College), Bainbridge College and Kaplan University. His bachelor’s degree is in business management, and his associate’s degree is in drafting technology. Ferguson also has a diploma in advance drafting and design.
Ferguson has worked 16 years with Evoqua in drafting and design and is currently an after-market account manager.
His community work includes Fresh Start Global Outreach Ministries in Cairo where he is a member. He is active with “Young Men of Hope,” a mentoring group for young men, ages 9-18.
Ferguson has been a volunteer youth football coach with the Grady County Recreation Department for eight years. He is an active member of the Thomasville Alumni of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., where he serves as the assistant keeper of records and works with the Kappa League mentoring group.
Ferguson says his favorite quote is, “Life deals you a hand. It’s up to you how you play it.”
Ferguson is married to the former Carolyn Richardson Meades and they have five children, Fergus Robinson Jr., Kentrel Robinson, Fer’Darius Robinson, Brittney Bodiford and Tyler Meades.
