ends this Friday
The deadline to register early for the 5K run/walk in support of the Jackie Robinson Boys and Girls Club is this Friday. The 2015 Wilcox Memorial 5K, named in honor of the late Marshell Wilcox, takes place in Cairo on Saturday, Aug. 15.
The entry fee for early registrants is $10 or $15 for runners and walkers who want a t-shirt.
Registration forms may be found at the Boys and Girls Club at Cairo’s Holder Park, the Cairo/Grady County Chamber of Commerce, Capital City Bank and Center Drugs.
For those who want to participate but are unable to register before the early deadline, there will be registration on race day beginning at 7:30 a.m. for $20, and t-shirts are not guaranteed.
Mrs. Wilcox passed away Aug. 13, 2013 at the age of 49, her widower, James Wilcox Sr., says.
Mr. Wilcox says his late wife had a soft spot in her heart for children, “helping the kids, that’s what she was about.” Marshell Wilcox is described as a loyal club employee for the Boys and Girls Club, where she worked with girls, 8-14 years old.
The Wilcoxes, married 25 years, had two children, J.J. Wilcox, who plays free safety for the Dallas Cowboys, and Iesha Wilcox, a junior at Cairo High School.
Mr. Wilcox says he hopes this year’s walk will be even bigger than last year. He says his son and Nike are sponsors along with many other local businesses.
The event will begin and end at the Boys and Girls Club located on Sixth Street, S.W.
The race gets underway at 8 a.m., and awards will be given to the top three male and female finishers in each age group, in addition to the first male and first female to cross the finish line.
Proceeds go to support the Jackie Robinson Boys and Girls Club of Cairo/Grady County. “That’s what she would want,” Mr. Wilcox says.
