Christmas Parade steps off at 7 p.m. Thursday

The 2013 edition of the Cairo Christmas Parade will step off at 7 p.m., Thursday evening and this year’s parade is 78 units strong.
Cairo-Grady County Chamber of Commerce officials say they are particularly pleased to have four marching bands in the parade this year.
In addition to the Grady County Middle School Band and the Cairo High School Band, this year’s parade will feature the Pelham High School Band and the Thomasville High School Band.
This year’s theme is “The Joys of Christmas Toys” and prize money is up for grabs for the parade units that best express the theme.
Stop by Roddenbery Memorial Library before the Christmas Parade from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. and, for a small fee, the Friends of the Library will take you or your child’s picture with a Christmas Elf.
Chamber officials also reported that porta-potties will be placed at four different locations for the convenience of those attending the parade.
The portable restroom facilities will be located at the parking lot of United National Bank, the Northside Elementary School parking lot, the pocket park between Cairo City Hall and Mac’s Barber Shop, and in the city parking lot next door to Grady Finance Company on South Broad.
Chamber officials say that garbage receptacles will also be placed along the parade route by the city and those in attendance are encouraged to properly dispose of their litter rather than dropping cups, plates, and paper on the sidewalks and street.
Officials also remind those in the parade that the throwing of candy from parade units into the crowd is strictly prohibited. Walkers alongside floats are allowed to hand out candy, but no throwing of candy will be allowed.
“We are hoping for good weather and a big turnout. Come enjoy the parade and the entire weekend of events planned in downtown Cairo,” Chamber Executive Vice President Jennifer Majors said.
