Jenkins is elected school board vice chairman

The Grady County Board of Education elected a new vice chairman Tuesday night.
District 3 board member Allen Jenkins was elected to serve as vice chairman through the end of the year. District 5 board member Scott Higginbotham, who vacated his post to run for Cairo mayor, had been elected in January to serve as vice chairman for 2013.
According to Board Chairman Drew Pyrz, Jenkins will fill the remainder of the year as vice chairman and the board will elect a new chairman and vice chairman at the first meeting of 2014.
Jenkins, a Cairo firefighter and owner of Allen’s Barber Shop, 80 First Ave. N.E., was appointed to the board in Feb. 2012 to fill the unexpired term of Byron Puckett. Jenkins ran for election to a four-year term in Nov. 2012 and defeated challenger Marty Cannington.
Traditionally the school board rotates the chairmanship and vice chairmanship, which likely means Jenkins will be elected chairman and District 1 board member Jeff Worsham will be elected vice chairman in January.
Tuesday night was also the first meeting for newly appointed District 5 board member Dave Dumas.
